How would you like to clean up the bottom end, fit the kick and bass together and tighten up your kick drum all with one little tweak?  Sound too good to be true?  Well it’s not. The kick drum is probably the most important element of a good dance track, I’m sure you already know this.  It’s also one of the hardest to get right.

Even if your synths are on point, your basses huge and percussion snappy; if your kick drum doesn’t have the energy, punch and clarity to match then your entire track will be a let down.  That being said, there are so many ways you can fix this.

  • Choose a better sample
  • Make your own kick drum
  • Sample a kick drum from another track
  • Use EQ and compression to add some weight, power and punch
  • Tune your kick drum to the key of your track

You would probably need to implement a combination of these suggestions to make it sound just the way you want but you get the idea.  It’s not an easy thing to do.  Luckily, I’m here to show you one little tweak that will literally take you a couple of minutes but can completely transform your track to the better.

Tweak one little parameter or add some simple automation and you’ll be on your way to a better sounding kick drum.

I almost always suggest using a sampler plugin to house your kick drum sample and then using midi clips to draw in your kick patterns but you can still do this even if you’re using audio clips.  It’s just quicker to use a sampler and midi clips and you have much more control that way.  Watch the video to find out how to get massive sounding kick drums with just a small tweak.
